The Best of
BENJAMIN WEST

BENJAMIN WEST (1738 – 1820) was a British-American artist who painted famous historical scenes.

“West also painted religious subjects, as in his huge work The Preservation of St Paul after a Shipwreck at Malta.

“Benjamin West was known in England as the "American Raphael". His Raphaelesque painting of Archangel Michael Binding the Devil is in the collection of Trinity College, Cambridge.

“Following a loss of royal patronage at the beginning of the 19th century, West began a series of large-scale religious works. The first [was] Christ Healing the Sick. The success of the picture led him to paint a series of even larger works, including his Death on the Pale Horse.”

It was an easy call whether to include West in this Painters’ Pantheon.

Benjamin West is a fascinating character!

He was entirely self-taught and had very little education. He wound up going to Europe and painting there to great acclaim - his Death of Wolfe at Quebec and his Death of Nelson were very popular.

His religious subjects are often conventional - with the women being typical 18th century beauties and the men out of the French Academy. But every so often that internal brilliance breaks through - as in his painting of St. John writing the Revelation. Or his horrifying Judas at the Last Supper . . . .

Yes, I’ve noticed that conventionality, as you term it. I’ve learned to look past it.

We are, after all, on the winning side--and the deed is already done: no Doug Flutie heroics are needed.

All artists do it! We just don’t notice it if it’s a style we’re used to.
